Niigata Prefecture (新潟県, Niigata-ken) is a special area in Japan. It's called a prefecture, like a state or province. You can find it in the Chūbu region of Japan. This region is on Honshū, which is the largest island of Japan. The main city, or capital, of Niigata Prefecture is called Niigata City.

A Look Back in Time
For a long time, the area we now call Niigata Prefecture was split into two older areas. These were known as Echigo Province and Sado Province. This changed after a big event in Japan's history called the Meiji Restoration.
Where is Niigata?
Niigata Prefecture is surrounded by several other prefectures. It shares borders with Yamagata Prefecture, Toyama Prefecture, Nagano Prefecture, Gumma Prefecture, and Fukushima Prefecture.
Niigata is quite a large area. It is the fifth largest prefecture in all of Japan.
Weather and Fun
In winter, Niigata gets a lot of snow! This makes it a great place for winter sports. Many people enjoy skiing and snowboarding here.
Amazing Nature Spots
About a quarter of Niigata Prefecture's land is protected as National Parks. These are special places where nature is kept safe and beautiful. One of these is Bandai-Asahi National Park.
Important Shrines and Temples
Niigata Prefecture is home to several important religious sites. These include famous Shinto shrines like Yahiko-jinja, Kota-jinja, Amatsu-jinja, and Watatsu-jinja. These are known as the chief shrines (or ichinomiya) in the prefecture.
