Keakamāhana (born around 1615, died 1665) was a powerful ruler of Hawaiʻi Island. She was known as an aliʻi nui, which means a high chief or sovereign. Keakamāhana ruled Hawaiʻi Island for about 30 years, from 1635 to 1665. Her royal home was located at Hōlualoa Bay.

A Powerful Hawaiian Ruler

Keakamāhana was a very important leader in Hawaiian history. She held the highest position on Hawaiʻi Island. Her rule helped shape the island's future for many years. She was one of the few women to hold such a high position.

Her Early Life

Keakamāhana was the oldest daughter of King Keakealanikane. He was the previous aliʻi nui of Hawaiʻi. Her mother was named Kealiʻiokalani. Keakamāhana was born around 1615.

Becoming the Ruler

When her father, King Keakealanikane, passed away in 1635, Keakamāhana became the new ruler. She took on the important role of aliʻi nui of Hawaiʻi Island. This made her the supreme leader of the island.

Her Family and Legacy

Keakamāhana married her cousin, Aliʻi Iwikauikaua. He was the son of Aliʻi Makakaualiʻi and his wife Kapukāmola. Keakamāhana and Iwikauikaua had a daughter named Keakealaniwahine. When Keakamāhana died in 1665, her daughter Keakealaniwahine became the next ruler of Hawaiʻi Island. Keakamāhana's reign was a time of stability and leadership for her people.
