Keauhou Bay is a special historical place. It is located in the Kona District on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. The name Keauhou means "the new era" in the Hawaiian Language. This bay is known for its beautiful views and important history.

The Birthplace of King Kamehameha III
A small, protected area at Keauhou Bay marks the exact spot where King Kamehameha III was born in 1814. He was the second son of King Kamehameha I and Queen Keopuolani.
A Young King's Reign
Kamehameha III became king at a young age. At first, Kaʻahumanu helped him rule. He was the longest-reigning monarch in the Kingdom of Hawaii. He ruled until his death on December 15, 1854.
The Kauikeaouli Stone
At his birthplace, you can find the Kauikeaouli stone. Kauikeaouli was King Kamehameha III's birth name. This stone was added to Hawaii's list of historic places on January 13, 1978. It also became part of the National Register of Historic Places on July 24, 1978.
People say that when Kauikeaouli was born, he seemed lifeless. But a wise Hawaiian priest, called a Kahuna, placed him on this stone. The Kahuna then performed a sacred chant, and the baby was brought back to life!
Protecting History: The Daughters of Hawaii
The Daughters of Hawaii is a group that helps protect Hawaiian history. They held a special ceremony at the birthplace to mark its 100th anniversary. Queen Liliʻuokalani, Hawaii's last monarch, even attended. In 1925, the Daughters of Hawaii bought the land where the king's birth house once stood.
Nearby Historical Sites
Just north of Keauhou Bay is the Kahaluʻu Bay Historic District. Uphill from the bay is the Keauhou Holua Slide. This was a long, paved slide built for a sport enjoyed by Hawaiian chiefs. It was built during the time of Kamehameha I. To the south, you'll find the site of the Battle at Kuamoʻo, which happened in 1819.
Fun Activities and Recreation at Keauhou Bay
Keauhou Bay is not just about history; it's also a great place for fun and relaxation! The Keauhou Resort area includes the Sheraton Kona Resort & Spa. There's also the Keauhou Shopping Center, which is about 22.9-acre (93,000 m2) big. You can also find two golf courses, vacation homes, and other residences here.
Boating and Water Sports
There is a small boat ramp at the bay for everyone to use. Many tour companies start their trips here, taking people to beautiful places like Kealakekua Bay. The Keauhou Canoe Club also uses the bay for canoe races. It's a wonderful spot for water activities.
Golfing and Cultural Events
Above the bay, you'll find the Kona Country Club golf course. It was built in 1966. The land for the resort, which is about 2,400 acres (9.7 km2), is owned by a part of Kamehameha Schools. They often hold special cultural events at the resort for everyone to enjoy.
