Keisuke Tsuboi (坪井 慶介, Tsuboi Keisuke, born 16 September 1979) is a Japanese former professional footballer. He played as a defender, whose main job is to stop the other team from scoring goals. Tsuboi is well-known for his long career with Urawa Red Diamonds. He also played for the Japan national team.

Early Career and University Years

Keisuke Tsuboi started his football journey in high school. He played for Yokkaichi Chuo Kogyo High School. After that, he continued playing football while studying at Fukuoka University. These early years helped him develop his skills.

Time with Urawa Red Diamonds

In 2002, after finishing university, Tsuboi joined Urawa Red Diamonds. He quickly became an important player for the team. His first game was on March 3, 2002. He even won the Rookie of the Year award in his first season. In 2003, he was chosen as one of the best players in the J.League.

Tsuboi helped Urawa Red Diamonds achieve great success.

  • In 2006, his team won the J1 League title. This was the first time Urawa Red Diamonds had won this championship.
  • In 2007, they won the AFC Champions League, which is a big competition for clubs in Asia.

He played many games as a central defender for the club until 2010. After 2010, he played fewer matches.

Later Club Moves

In 2015, Tsuboi moved to another team called Shonan Bellmare. He did not play as many games there. In 2016, Shonan Bellmare was moved down to the J2 League. In 2018, he joined Renofa Yamaguchi FC, which was also a J2 League club. Keisuke Tsuboi retired from playing professional football in 2019.

Playing for Japan

Representing His Country

Keisuke Tsuboi also played for the Japan national team. In 2001, he helped Japan win a gold medal at the Summer Universiade in Beijing. This was a big sports event for university athletes.

His first game for the senior national team was on June 11, 2003. He played in a friendly match against Paraguay.

World Cup Experience

Tsuboi was part of the Japan team that played in the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He played in two matches during this major tournament. One game was against Australia and the other was against Brazil. In the match against Australia, he had to leave the game early due to cramps.

He was also in the squad for the 2007 AFC Asian Cup. However, he did not play in any games during that tournament. On February 8, 2008, Keisuke Tsuboi announced that he was retiring from international football. He played a total of 40 games for Japan.
