The Story of Kemp
How Kemp Got Its Name
Kemp wasn't always called Kemp! When it was first settled, it was known as Leasure, Illinois. This name was still used on maps from 1893. At that time, Leasure was located north of a railroad line. This railroad changed names a few times. It was first called the Illinois Midland Railroad, then the Terre Haute and Peoria Railroad. By 1914, it was known as the Vandalia Railroad. Around this time, the community also changed its name to Kemp.
The Kemp Church of Christ
A very important part of Kemp's history is the Kemp Church of Christ. This church has been a central part of the community for a long time. It was started in 1890 with 70 people joining as its first members. Even on the oldest maps of the town, the church is clearly shown. In August 1990, the church celebrated its 100th birthday! The church building is still standing today. Many people from the area continue to attend services there.
