Ken McGuinness (born 14 September 1975) is a former professional rugby league player from Australia. He was a talented player in the 1990s and early 2000s. Ken played for several teams, including the Western Suburbs Magpies, Wests Tigers, and North Queensland Cowboys. He mostly played as a centre, which is a key attacking position in rugby league. He even played for his home state, New South Wales, five times!

Ken's Rugby League Journey

Ken McGuinness started his professional career with the Western Suburbs Magpies. He played many games for them from 1994 to 1999. He was a strong player, scoring 35 tries during his time with the Magpies.

Moving to Wests Tigers

After the 1999 season, the Western Suburbs Magpies joined with the Balmain Tigers to form a new team called the Wests Tigers. Ken was one of nine players from the Magpies who moved to this new team. However, he found it hard to get a regular spot in the main team during their first year in 2000.

Playing for Other Teams

In August 2000, Ken also played in a couple of special matches for the South Sydney Rabbitohs. These games were against teams from Lebanon and the United States.

In 2001, Ken played in the Queensland Cup competition, which is a league below the top professional level. He even played in the grand final for the Toowoomba Clydesdales that year.

Time with North Queensland Cowboys

In 2002, Ken joined the North Queensland Cowboys. He played nine games for them and scored one try.

Retirement from the Game

After his time with the Cowboys, Ken McGuinness decided to retire from professional rugby league. He was 26 years old at the time. He mentioned that he had lost his strong passion for the game.

Representing New South Wales

While playing for the Western Suburbs Magpies, Ken was chosen to play for the New South Wales Origin team. This is a very big honor in Australian rugby league! He played for New South Wales five times in the 1997 and 1998 series, scoring one try for his state.
