Kenji Wakai (若井 研治, Wakai Kenji, born September 22, 1974) is a former professional Japanese football player. He was known for playing as a forward, which is like a striker, trying to score goals for his team.

He loved playing football from a young age. He played for his high school team at Fuchu High School. This was from 1990 to 1992.
After high school, he continued to play football. He joined the team at the University of Tsukuba. He played there while studying from 1993 to 1996.
Playing for Sanfrecce Hiroshima
After finishing university, Kenji Wakai joined a professional football club. This club was Sanfrecce Hiroshima, located in his home region. He joined them in 1997.
He played as a forward for the team. However, he only got to play in a few matches. He usually came in as a substitute player. It was hard for him to get a lot of time on the field.
