Starting His Football Dream

Kenji Wakamatsu was born in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. He loved playing football when he was young. After going to Fukuoka University, he decided to become a professional player. In 1993, he joined a team named Sanfrecce Hiroshima.

Playing for Sanfrecce Hiroshima

Kenji Wakamatsu played as a forward. A forward's main job in football is to score goals! In 1993, he got a chance to play in the J.League Cup. This was a special tournament for Japanese football clubs. He played in five matches during this cup. He even scored one goal!

He got this opportunity because another important player, Takuya Takagi, was away. Takagi was playing for the Japanese national team. So, Kenji stepped in to help his club.
