Captain Kenneth Mackenzie, 2nd of Suddie was a brave Scottish soldier. He was killed in 1688 during the Battle of Mulroy. He was leading government soldiers against some Scottish clans who were rebelling.
Who Was Kenneth Mackenzie?
Kenneth Mackenzie was the son of Alexander Mackenzie, 1st of Suddie. His mother was Mary Bruce, from a family in Airth. Kenneth was part of a large Scottish family group called Clan Mackenzie.
His Military Life
Kenneth Mackenzie of Suddie started his military career as a Captain. In 1666, he served in France with a group called Dumbarton's Regiment. Later, he became a Royalist soldier in Scotland. This meant he supported the King.
He was chosen to lead a special group called an Independent Highland Company. These companies were set up to help keep the peace in the Highlands of Scotland. They worked for the Scottish Government.
In 1685, the Privy Council of Scotland gave him a special order. He was told to take stronger action against "caterans" and "broken men." These were groups of people who caused trouble and stole things. Captain Mackenzie and his company were very good at this job. They were so successful that the government decided to create another company like his.
In 1688, the Privy Council gave Captain Mackenzie another important task. He and his company were ordered to help the Mackintosh clan. The Mackintosh clan was having a fight with the MacDonald of Keppoch clan. This fight led to the Battle of Mulroy in August 1688. Captain Mackenzie was killed during this battle. His Independent Highland Company also lost many soldiers.
His Family
Kenneth Mackenzie of Suddie married Isobel Paterson. She was the daughter of John Paterson, who was the Bishop of Ross. They had several children:
- Kenneth Mackenzie, who became the 3rd of Suddie after his father.
- George Mackenzie, who sadly died during a failed plan called the Darien scheme.
- Margaret Mackenzie, who married Colonel Alexander Mackenzie of Conansbay. He was the son of Kenneth Mackenzie, 3rd Earl of Seaforth, who was the chief of the Clan Mackenzie.
- Alice Mackenzie, who married twice. Her first husband was John Macdonald of Balcony in 1698. He was the only son of Sir James Macdonald, chief of the Clan Macdonald of Sleat. Later, Alice married John Maclean, who was a doctor in Inverness.
