Kenneth Bridgeforth Spaulding was born on November 29, 1944. He is an American politician and lawyer from North Carolina. He is a member of the Democratic Party. Spaulding served in the North Carolina House of Representatives from 1978 to 1984. He has dedicated his career to public service and law.
Ken Spaulding's Early Life and Education
Ken Spaulding grew up in Durham, North Carolina. His father, Asa T. Spaulding Sr., was a leader at the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company. His mother, Elna Spaulding, was the first woman to serve as a county commissioner in Durham County. His grandfather, George Ruffin Bridgeforth, was an administrator at the Tuskegee Institute.
Spaulding attended Howard University, a well-known university. He graduated in 1967 with a degree in Government. He also studied Business Administration and Sociology. Later, he earned his law degree from the University of North Carolina School of Law in 1970. After law school, he became a lawyer. He worked on many important cases and helped develop large projects in Durham.
Ken Spaulding's Political Career
Ken Spaulding began his political journey in the North Carolina House of Representatives. He served there from 1978 to 1984. This role allowed him to help make laws for the state.
In 1984, Spaulding decided to run for the United States House of Representatives. He wanted to represent North Carolina's 2nd district. He ran against another Democrat, Tim Valentine, in the primary election. Spaulding received many votes but did not win this election.
Later, Spaulding continued his public service. He was part of the North Carolina Board of Transportation. This board helps manage the state's roads and transportation systems. He served under Governor Mike Easley.
In 2013, Spaulding announced he would run for Governor of North Carolina. He sought the Democratic nomination in the 2016 North Carolina gubernatorial election. He ran in the primary election but lost to Roy Cooper. Roy Cooper then went on to win the general election and became governor.
