Kenneth de Moravia (also known as Kenneth Sutherland) was an important Scottish leader. He was the 4th Earl of Sutherland and the head of the Clan Sutherland. This was a powerful Scottish clan from the Scottish Highlands. He died on July 19, 1333.

Early Life of Kenneth

Kenneth de Moravia was the second son of William de Moravia, 2nd Earl of Sutherland. When his older brother, William de Moravia, 3rd Earl of Sutherland, passed away, Kenneth became the new Earl of Sutherland.

Becoming Earl of Sutherland

Kenneth first appears in historical records in December 1330. This was when Reginald Moray of Culbin gave up his claims to lands in the Sutherland area. Kenneth de Moravia, the 4th Earl of Sutherland, was killed in battle. He died fighting against the English at the Battle of Halidon Hill on July 19, 1333.

Kenneth's Family

According to a historian from the 1600s, Sir Robert Gordon, 1st Baronet, Kenneth de Moravia married a woman named Mary or Marjorie. She was the daughter of Domhnall I, Earl of Mar.

Kenneth and Mary had the following children:

  1. William de Moravia, 5th Earl of Sutherland. He became the next Earl.
  2. Nicholas Sutherland, 1st of Duffus. His family later became known as the Sutherlands, Lords Duffus.
  3. Eustachia. She married Gilbert Moray around December 1330. Gilbert was the son of Reginald Moray of Culbin.
