Domhnall I, Earl of Mar was an important Scottish nobleman. He was also known as Domhnall mac Uilleim, which means "Donald, William's son." He was the seventh person to hold the title of Earl of Mar in Scotland.
Domhnall became Earl of Mar after his father, Uilleam of Mar, passed away in 1276. He ruled the area of Mar until his own death, which happened sometime between 1297 and 1302.
In 1284, Domhnall joined other Scottish nobles. They all agreed that Margaret, Maid of Norway should be the next ruler of Scotland. She was the granddaughter of King Alexander III.
Later, Domhnall strongly supported the Bruce family. This was during a difficult time in Scotland in the late 1200s. He was present at Norham in 1292, likely supporting Robert de Brus, who was then the Earl of Carrick.
Domhnall's Family Life
Domhnall married a woman named Helen, who was also known as Ellen. She had been married before to Maol Choluim II, Earl of Fife. Helen might have been the daughter of Llywelyn the Great from Wales.
Who Were Domhnall's Children?
Domhnall and Helen had five children together. They had three sons and two daughters:
- Gartnait: He was their oldest son and became the 8th Earl of Mar after his father.
- Duncan of Mar
- Alexander of Mar: He was held prisoner in the Tower of London in December 1297.
- Isabella of Mar: She was a very important daughter. Isabella married Robert I of Scotland as his first wife. She was the mother of Marjorie Bruce. Marjorie later married Walter Stewart, 6th High Steward of Scotland. Marjorie and Walter's son was Robert II of Scotland, who became the first king of Scotland from the Royal House of Stuart.
- Margaret of Mar: She was also called Marjory. She married John of Strathbogie, 9th Earl of Atholl.
When Did Domhnall Pass Away?
The last official record of Domhnall is from 1297. The first record of his son Gartnait as Earl is from 1305. This means Domhnall likely died sometime between these two dates. However, a document from 1302 suggests that Domhnall had just passed away around that time. This document talked about an agreement between Edward I of England and Robert the Bruce. It said that Robert should look after Gartnait.
