Building a Great Castle
Uilleam was famous for building Kildrummy Castle. This was the biggest castle constructed in northern Scotland during the 1200s. It's special because it was built by a Scottish leader, not by the Normans who often built large castles back then.
A Leader in Scottish Politics
Uilleam was very involved in the politics of Scotland, even more than the leaders before him. He became a key figure in the government during the rule of King Alexander II. He also played a big role when King Alexander III was young and couldn't rule by himself.
Important Family Connections
In 1244, Uilleam married Elisabeth Comyn. She was from the Comyn family, a very powerful French family in Scotland. Elisabeth's parents were William Comyn, jure uxoris Earl of Buchan and Marjory, Countess of Buchan. This marriage between the Comyn and Mar families helped them work together. They stood strong against the Durward family, who were also trying to gain power with the king.
Facing Challenges from Alan Durward
Alan Durward tried to claim Uilleam's title as Mormaer of Mar. Alan said he had a right to it because he was related to an earlier Earl, Gille Críst. But Uilleam successfully defended his position and kept his title. Later, Uilleam and the Comyn Earl of Menteith even accused Alan of serious wrongdoing. This happened when they were at the court of Henry III of England in York.
Expanding His Influence
Uilleam worked to increase his power across Scotland. From 1264 to 1266, he held the important job of Sheriff of Dumbarton. This role helped him make connections in the western Highlands.
A Strategic Marriage for His Son
Uilleam also arranged a clever marriage for his younger son, Donnchadh. Donnchadh married Cairistíona Nic Ruaidhrí. She was the daughter of Ailéan mac Ruaidhrí, a powerful chief from the Hebrides islands. Ailéan had supported Norway against the Scottish Crown in the 1260s. This marriage helped Uilleam build ties with important families in the west.
Later Life and Family
Uilleam's first wife, Isabel (also called Elizabeth), passed away in 1267. After that, Uilleam married Muriel. She was the daughter of Maol Íosa II, who was the Mormaer of Strathearn.
Uilleam of Mar died in 1276. His son, Domhnall, took over his title and responsibilities.
