Becoming Countess of Buchan
Marjory became Countess because her father, Fergus, Earl of Buchan, had no sons. When he passed away, Marjory, as his daughter, inherited his important title and lands.
Marjory's Marriage
Marjory married William Comyn, Lord of Badenoch. William was already a powerful lord. This was William's second marriage. Because he married Marjory, he also became an Earl. He was known as the Earl of Buchan jure uxoris. This Latin phrase means "by right of his wife." So, he was an Earl because his wife, Marjory, was the Countess.
Founding Deer Abbey
In 1219, Marjory and William worked together to start a special place. They founded a Cistercian Abbey in a place called Deer. An abbey is a type of monastery where monks or nuns live and pray. This abbey was dedicated to Mary.
Later Life and Family
William Comyn passed away in 1233. After his death, Marjory continued to be the Countess of Buchan on her own. She held this important title until she passed away. After her death, her son, Alexander, became the next Earl of Buchan.
