Alexander Comyn, 2nd Earl of Buchan (died 1289) was a very important Scottish noble. He lived in the 13th century. His family, the Comyns, were powerful in the Kingdom of Scotland.
Alexander was the son of William Comyn, jure uxoris Earl of Buchan. His mother was Marjory, Countess of Buchan. She inherited the title of Countess from her father, Fergus. Fergus was the last native Scottish ruler of Buchan, called a Mormaer.
Alexander Comyn was a trusted advisor to King Alexander III. He helped the King for many years. As a top noble, he worked to keep Scotland independent. He held several important jobs during his life. These included Justiciar of Scotia (a chief judge) and Constable of Scotland (a military leader). He was also a Sheriff and a Baillie.
After King Alexander III died, Alexander Comyn became a Guardian of Scotland. The Guardians ruled Scotland while there was no king. This period is called an interregnum. In 1284, he agreed that Margaret of Norway should be the next queen. Alexander Comyn died in late 1289.
