Playing Career Highlights
Kenny Black was a player who could defend or play in the middle of the field. He started his football journey with Rangers in 1980. To get more experience, he played for a junior team called Linlithgow Rose.
In 1983, while still a teenager, he moved to Motherwell. A year later, he joined Heart of Midlothian. He was part of the Hearts team that almost won two big trophies in the 1985–86 season: the Scottish Premier Division and the Scottish Cup.
In 1989, Kenny moved to Portsmouth. Then, in 1991, he joined Airdrieonians. With Airdrieonians, he won his first major medal, the Scottish Challenge Cup, in 1994–95. He also played in the Scottish Cup final that season, but his team lost.
After Airdrieonians, Kenny played for Raith Rovers for two more seasons, finishing his playing career as a very experienced player.
Coaching Journey
After his playing days, Kenny Black became a coach. In 2001, he became an assistant manager at Raith Rovers. He left in 2002 but soon found a new role as an assistant coach at Airdrie United. This team was a new version of his old club, Airdrieonians.
In 2004, Kenny moved to Leicester City to coach there. He returned to Airdrie United in 2006, this time as the manager. He led the team to win the 2008–09 Scottish Challenge Cup.
In 2010, Kenny left Airdrie United. Soon after, he became an assistant coach for the Scotland national team.
In 2011, Kenny became the assistant manager at Motherwell. He and manager Stuart McCall helped the club finish very high in the league for several seasons. In November 2014, Kenny became the caretaker manager for five matches after Stuart McCall left. He stayed on as assistant manager for a short time but then left in February 2015.
Kenny Black joined Stuart McCall again as assistant manager at Rangers in March 2015, but they left a couple of months later. In 2016, he became assistant manager at Bradford City in England, leaving in 2018. He returned to Bradford City for a second time in 2020.
