Kenta Kawai (川井 健太, Kawai Kenta, born June 7, 1981) is a Japanese professional football manager and former player. He was most recently the manager of the Sagan Tosu football club. His brother, Koichi Kawai, is also a footballer.
Playing Football
Kenta Kawai was born in Uwajima, Japan, on June 7, 1981. After finishing university, he joined Ehime FC in 2004. This club was based in his hometown. His brother, Koichi Kawai, also played for Ehime FC.
Kenta played in many matches during his first year. However, he did not play at all in 2005. In 2006, Ehime FC moved up to the J2 League, a higher division. Kenta did not play many matches that year and decided to retire from playing football at the end of 2006.
Becoming a Coach
After retiring as a player, Kenta Kawai started his coaching career. In 2008, he began coaching at Ehime Women's College in his hometown of Uwajima. He coached there until 2017.
In 2012, he also joined Ehime FC Ladies, a women's football club. He worked as a coach under manager Kenichi Ego. In 2015, Kenta Kawai became the manager of Ehime FC Ladies, taking over from Ego. He managed the team until 2017.
Managing Professional Teams
In 2018, Kenta Kawai joined J2 League club Ehime FC, the same club he played for. He started as a manager for their youth team. In May 2018, the main team's manager was replaced. Kenta Kawai then became the manager for the top team. At that time, the club was in 20th place out of 22 teams.
Kawai helped the team improve their performance. They finished the 2018 season in 18th place. He continued to manage Ehime FC until 2021.
From 2022 to 2024, Kenta Kawai was the manager for Sagan Tosu, another professional football club.
