An ambassador is a top diplomat who represents their country in another nation. Kenton Keith was the United States Ambassador to Qatar from 1992 to 1995.
He also served in the U.S. Navy. Later, he was a Senior Vice President at the American Academy of Diplomacy. This group helps teach people about diplomacy. Ambassador Keith has received two special awards from the President. He also has a special honor from France called a Chevalier in the French Order of Arts and Letters.
Early Life and Education
Kenton Keith was born on November 12, 1939. His hometown was Kansas City, Missouri. His mother, Gertrude Keith, worked for the government. She was one of the first African-American women to go to college in the U.S. His father, Jimmy Keith, was a famous jazz saxophone player in Kansas City.
Kenton Keith went to Lincoln High School in Kansas City. After high school, he studied at The University of Kansas. In 1961, he earned degrees in International Relations and French. While at college, he also joined the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC). This program helped him become an officer in the U.S. Navy. He served as a lieutenant.
Family Life
In June 1963, Kenton Keith married Brenda Ayo. They had two children together. Their son's name is Vincent, and their daughter's name is Pamela.
Kenton Keith is also a member of a fraternity called Alpha Phi Alpha. He is part of their World Policy Council. This group is like a "think tank." It helps Alpha Phi Alpha get more involved in world politics and social issues.
