The Kentucky Arts Council helps support and promote art in Kentucky. It was started in 1966. This council is part of the Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet. In 2016, the council's budget was cut. It lost $170,000 over two and a half years. Its budget had been $3.7 million. The next year, the National Endowment for the Arts gave the council more money. They awarded $746,500, which was a 5% increase.
New Leadership and Awards
In March 2019, Chris Cathers became the new executive director. He had been the temporary director since 2017. In January 2021, the council celebrated the 2020 Kentucky Governor's Awards in the Arts. These awards have been given since 1977. The ceremony was held online that year.

In May 2021, Kentucky received over $800,000 in federal money. This funding was to help the state's art groups. It helped them recover from the COVID-19 pandemic in Kentucky. The council decided how to share this money with art organizations.
