About the Kentucky Folk Art Center

The Kentucky Folk Art Center started in 1985. It began as part of Morehead State University's art collection. At first, the art was kept in two different buildings. In 1997, the collection moved to a historic spot. This new home was the old Union Grocery Building. It is in Morehead's First Street Arts District. The museum now has 1,407 pieces of art. All these artworks are by talented Kentucky folk artists.

What You Can See at the Center

The main floor of the building has the Lovena and William Richardson Gallery. This gallery shows about 115 pieces from the museum's large collection. The art here changes often. You can also find the museum store on this floor. It sells folk art and learning materials. There is also the Jimmie Ruth Auditorium. This space has 50 seats and is used for group activities.

Upstairs, on the second floor, is the Garland and Minnie Adkins Gallery. This gallery hosts many different cultural events. You can also find the Edgar Tolson Folk Art Library here. It is a great place to learn more about folk art. The second floor also has offices and storage rooms. These rooms keep the museum's permanent collection safe.

In 2009, the museum won a special award. It received the Kentucky Folk Heritage Award. This award recognized its important work. In recent years, the center has faced some challenges with its funding.
