What Does the Council Do?
The Council has several important jobs. They work to save historical places and make sure people know about Kentucky's past.
Keeping Historical Records
The Council has a large collection of historical information. This includes:
- Survey forms about old buildings
- Maps of important sites
- Photographs of historic structures
- Pictures of archaeological sites (places where people find old artifacts)
This collection helps them keep track of Kentucky's history and decide which places need protection.
Special Programs and Partnerships
The Council runs different programs to help protect history and educate people.
Kentucky Crossroads Initiative
One program is called the Kentucky Crossroads Rural Heritage Development Initiative. This program works with another group called Preservation Kentucky. Together, they help protect historical places in the countryside and also help local economies grow. It's a way to save history and help communities at the same time.
Kentucky Archaeological Survey
The Council also partners with the University of Kentucky Department of Anthropology for the Kentucky Archaeological Survey. This partnership has two main goals:
- To protect archaeological sites: These are places where scientists dig up clues about how people lived long ago.
- To teach the public: They help people understand why these old sites are important and how to keep them safe for the future.
