About the Kerlin Gallery
The Kerlin Gallery first opened in 1988. Its current building was designed in 1994 by a famous architect named John Pawson. It's in central Dublin and has lots of space for art. There are 3,600 square feet of gallery space across two floors.
In 2015, a website called Artnet said it was one of "Europe's Top 55 Galleries." That's pretty awesome! David Fitzgerald, Darragh Hogan, and John Kennedy are the people who run the gallery. In 2018, the gallery gave some artworks to the Irish Museum of Modern Art.
What You Can See: Exhibitions
The Kerlin Gallery usually has eight art shows each year. Most of these are "solo exhibitions," meaning they feature the work of just one artist. Sometimes, they have "group exhibitions" with art from many different artists. They also invite other artists to show their work.
Some artists have had many solo shows at the gallery. For example, Sean Scully has shown his art seven times since 1994. Dorothy Cross has had nine shows since 1990. Mark Francis has had ten shows since 1995. Willie Doherty has also had ten shows since 1995. Elizabeth Magill has shown her work eight times since 1989.
The gallery also welcomes new artists. Ailbhe Ní Bhriain had her first solo show there in 2023. Nathalie Du Pasquier and Zhou Li had their first shows in 2022. Gerard Byrne had his first show in 2018.
Group Shows and Special Exhibitions
The Kerlin Gallery has hosted many interesting group exhibitions. In 2023, they had a show called "HERE COMES LOVE." In 2018, there was "Face to Face," put together by Hendrik Driesson. He was the first director of the De Pont Museum of Contemporary Art.
Another show in 2003 was "Architecture Schmarchitecture." It featured artists like Isa Genzken, Liam Gillick, and Thomas Scheibitz. In 1998, they had "Newfound Landscape" with artists such as Uta Barth and Oliver Boberg.
In 2019, the gallery put on a show called Shadowplay. This show included works by Willie Doherty, Aleana Egan, and Liam Gillick. The title of the show came from a song by the band Joy Division.
In 2021, the gallery showed art by Lawrence Weiner, a conceptual artist. Other famous artists who have shown their work at the Kerlin Gallery include Andy Warhol, Hiroshi Sugimoto, and Richard Hamilton. You might also have seen art by Francesco Clemente, Martin Kippenberger, and Albert Oehlen there.
