About John Pawson
John Pawson grew up in Halifax, Yorkshire, as the youngest of five children. He went to Eton, a well-known school. After working in his family's textile business for a while, he moved to Japan in his mid-twenties. In Tokyo, he visited the studio of a famous Japanese designer named Shiro Kuramata.
When he returned to England, he studied at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. In 1981, he started his own design company.
Becoming a Designer
John Pawson is known as an 'architectural designer' because he didn't take all the official exams to become a fully certified architect. Even so, his work is highly respected and recognized around the world.
Pawson's designs always focus on important ideas like how space feels, how things are balanced (proportion), how light enters a building, and the types of materials used.
Pawson's Projects
While he has designed many private homes, John Pawson has also worked on a wide variety of other projects. These include the Sackler Crossing, a special walkway over a lake at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. He also designed a main store for the fashion brand Calvin Klein.
He has worked on big projects for hotels and even designed sets for ballets. Other unique projects include the inside of yachts, a new monastery in the Czech Republic, and transforming an old Second World War bunker in Berlin into an art space called The Feuerle Collection. His company also helped create a new permanent home for the Design Museum in London.
In 2010, the Design Museum held an exhibition to show off Pawson's work. Later, in 2018, he had his first photography exhibition in London. This show displayed 320 images from his book called Spectrum. The exhibition was set up like an architectural space, where the colors of the spectrum could be seen across the whole room.
In 2019, John Pawson was given a special honor called the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). This award recognized his important contributions to design and architecture.
