Kermit Moore (born March 11, 1929 – died November 11, 2013) was an amazing American musician. He was a talented conductor, who leads an orchestra, a cellist, who plays the cello, and a composer, who writes music.
Early Life and Music Education
Kermit Moore was born in Akron, Ohio. He was an African American musician.
Even when he was still in high school, Kermit Moore was already studying music. He attended the Cleveland Institute of Music.
Later, in New York City, he continued his studies. He learned to play the cello from a famous teacher named Felix Salmond at the Juilliard School. At the same time, he also studied at New York University. There, he earned a master's degree in two subjects: composition (how to write music) and musicology (the study of music history and culture).
A Career in Music
Kermit Moore helped start important musical groups. He was one of the people who created the Symphony of the New World. This was a very special orchestra because it was the first one in the United States to have musicians of all races playing together.
He also worked with his wife, Dorothy Rudd Moore, who was also a composer. Together with others, they founded the Society of Black Composers. This group helped support and promote music written by Black composers. Kermit Moore was also a member of the Musicians Club of New York. He even served on its board, helping to guide the club.
