Kermit the Hermit is a fun picture book for children. It was written and illustrated by the famous author Bill Peet. The book first came out in 1965.
It tells the story of a crab named Kermit who loves to collect things. He gathers all sorts of items he doesn't really need. Bill Peet shared that he got the idea for the book from seeing crabs piled up at a seafood market. This popular book has been printed many times since it was first published.
The Story of Kermit
The book follows Kermit, a crab who collects many items. He keeps them all in his cave. One day, Kermit tries to grab yet another item. Suddenly, a dog almost buries him in the sand! Luckily, a kind, poor boy saves Kermit.
Kermit feels very thankful to the boy. He wants to find a way to show his gratitude. He thinks and thinks, but can't come up with a good idea. Later, Kermit discovers a chest filled with shiny gold pieces.
Kermit's Big Change
Kermit starts to bring the gold pieces into his cave. As he adds more gold, he slowly begins to give away his other possessions. One by one, he lets go of the things he had collected. Soon, his cave is full of only gold, and he has no other belongings left.
With help from a friendly pelican, Kermit finds a way to give the gold to the boy. They drop the coins down the boy's chimney. The boy's family becomes rich because of Kermit's gift. Through this experience, Kermit learns an important lesson: sharing with others is much more rewarding than hoarding things for himself.
