The Kerrang! Awards were a yearly music awards show in the United Kingdom. They were created by the music magazine Kerrang! and mainly celebrated rock music. These awards often included live performances by famous artists. Some of the most popular awards were shown on TV.
About the Kerrang! Awards
The Kerrang! Awards started in 1994. They quickly became one of Britain's most famous award shows. Even the Guinness Book of British Hit Singles & Albums often listed some of the winners.
Many music stars and other famous people attended the event. Sometimes, they even presented the awards. For example, Jodie Marsh presented Feeder with their Best British Band award in 2003.
One memorable moment happened in 2000. The band Slipknot famously set fire to their table after winning Best Band in the World! Lostprophets almost won the Best British Band award three times in a row. However, Bullet for My Valentine beat them in 2008. Bullet for My Valentine then won the award three times in a row themselves by 2010.
Thirty Seconds to Mars holds the record for winning the Best Single award three times. They were also the first band to win Best Single two years in a row. This happened at the 2007 and 2008 awards. Many big companies helped sponsor the awards. These included Island Records and Marshall Amplification.
The awards did not always pick the most famous bands. Sometimes, newer awards like Best International Newcomer went to bands that were not yet very well known. These bands might have had a strong live show, like Trash Talk in 2010. However, most awards honored artists who were already very successful. Examples include Best British Band and Best International Band.
Winning an award was a big deal for artists. Feeder's singer, Grant Nicholas, said their 2003 award was special. Their late drummer, Jon Lee, had always wanted the band to win it. Nicholas dedicated the award to him.
In the same year, Justin Hawkins from the Darkness was sad not to win Best British Newcomer. He wanted his band to win every award they were nominated for. But Funeral for a Friend won that one instead. Also in 2003, the band Good Charlotte was booed by the crowd when they won "Best Single."
The 23rd Kerrang! Awards took place on June 13, 2014. They were held at the Troxy in Stepney, London.
The awards did not happen in 2017. But they returned in June 2018. Bands like Neck Deep and Foo Fighters won awards. Famous guests like Johnny Depp also attended. The 2018 event was not shown on TV. However, videos of speeches were put on Kerrang!'s YouTube channel. The magazine also covered the event a lot.
The Kerrang! Awards were paused in 2020 and 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The show was planned to return in June 2022.
