Kerstin Ekman started her writing career by creating popular detective novels. Some of her early mystery books include De tre små mästarna and Dödsklockan. Later, she began writing stories that explored deeper ideas about people's thoughts and how society works.

Notable Works and Themes

One of her well-known books is Mörker och blåbärsris, which came out in 1972. This story is set in the northern part of Sweden. In 1993, she wrote Händelser vid vatten, which is also known as Blackwater. With this book, she returned to writing a detective story, which many readers enjoyed.

Her Time in the Swedish Academy

In 1978, Kerstin Ekman was chosen to be a member of the Swedish Academy. This is a very important group in Sweden that works to promote the Swedish language and literature. She was a member for many years, but she decided to leave the Academy in 1989. She left along with two other members, Lars Gyllensten and Werner Aspenström. This decision came after a big discussion about a writer named Salman Rushdie.

The rules for being a member of the Swedish Academy changed over time. Because of these new rules, the Academy officially accepted her resignation in 2018.

Awards and Recognition

Kerstin Ekman has received many honors for her writing. In 1998, she was given the Litteris et Artibus medal. This is a special award from the King of Sweden for people who have made important contributions to arts and literature.
