Building Ketcham's Fort

Ketcham's Fort was set up around 1811 or 1812. It was built on land owned by a man named John Ketcham. The fort was near the east fork of the White River. Its main purpose was to protect the first settlers living in what is now Brownstown Township.

Why Was It Important?

While Ketcham's Fort might not have had as many strong defenses as Fort Vallonia, it was still a very important place. It served as an "outpost," which means it was a distant station or base. This helped keep an eye on the surrounding area. Another similar outpost was Huff's Fort, which was a bit closer to Fort Vallonia. These forts were crucial for the safety of families settling in the Indiana wilderness during that time.
