A Look into Keutschach's Past
The area known as Chodesach was first mentioned in official papers in 1150. This was during the time of the Duchy of Carinthia, a historical region. The land here was the original home of the noble Keutschach family. They were first written about in 1299.
One of the most famous members of this family was Leonhard von Keutschach (born around 1442, died 1519). He became a very important church leader, the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg, from 1495 until he passed away.
In the early 1500s, the Keutschach family built a beautiful Renaissance style castle. Later, this castle was replaced by a new building nearby, built in the Baroque style. This "New Castle" (Neues Schloss) was finished in 1679. It was later rebuilt again in the 1700s by another noble family, the Orsini-Rosenbergs.
For many centuries, farming was the main way people made a living in Keutschach. However, in the 1900s, summer tourism started to become very popular. Today, tourism is the biggest source of income for the town. Many visitors come to enjoy the beautiful lakes and scenery.
