Kevin M. Brooks (born 30 March 1959) is an English writer famous for his novels for young adults.
One of his most well-known books is The Bunker Diary, which was published in 2013. For this book, he won the famous Carnegie Medal. This award is given each year to the best new book for young people in the United Kingdom. The book's serious themes made it a topic of much discussion among librarians who chose the winner.
Early Life and Schooling
Kevin Brooks was born in Pinhoe, a town near Exeter, England. He is the middle of three brothers.
When he was 11, he earned a scholarship to attend Exeter School. At school, he sometimes felt different from the other students, who came from wealthier families. He found comfort and enjoyment in reading and writing stories. Later, he went to Aston University in Birmingham to study psychology and philosophy.
Writing Career
Brooks's first novel, Martyn Pig, came out in 2002. It was published by The Chicken House. For this book, Brooks and his editor won the Branford Boase Award. This special award celebrates great new British writers for young people.
His 2009 novel, Dawn (which was called Killing God in the UK), is one of his most popular books found in libraries around the world. The story is about a girl named Dawn who is dealing with difficult feelings after her father disappears.
In 2011, Brooks also started writing a series of detective stories for adults.
