Kevin Chief is a Canadian politician. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba. This is like being a representative in the provincial government. He represented the area called Point Douglas from 2011 to 2017. He was part of the New Democratic Party.
In 2010, Kevin Chief received a special award. It was called the Future Leaders of Manitoba award. He won it for his work helping the community. Other people who won this award include activists, filmmakers, and community leaders.
Kevin Chief's Political Journey
Starting in Politics
Kevin Chief first tried to become a member of the House of Commons of Canada. This is part of the national government. He ran in a special election in 2010. He was a candidate for the federal NDP. He came in second place in that election.
After this, Kevin Chief decided to run for the provincial government instead. He ran in the 2011 Manitoba general election. He won the election for the Point Douglas area. This meant he became a member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba.
Becoming a Minister
On January 13, 2011, Kevin Chief was given an important job. He became a Minister. A Minister is in charge of a government department. He was responsible for a new department. This department focused on opportunities for children and youth.
Later, on November 3, 2014, he received another important role. He was made the Minister of Jobs and the Economy. This job involved looking after jobs and the economy in Manitoba.
Leaving Politics
Kevin Chief won his seat again in the 2016 Manitoba general election. People thought he might become the leader of his party. However, in September 2016, he announced he would not run for party leader.
In December 2016, he shared that he would leave his position. He resigned from the legislature for family reasons. His last day as a representative was January 9, 2017.
