Keweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College, often called KBOCC, is a special kind of college. It's a public tribal community college located in L’Anse, Michigan. This means it's run by a Native American tribe. It helps students get a good education close to home.
A Look Back: KBOCC's Journey
KBOCC started on July 12, 1975. It was created by the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community. The community wanted to make sure Native American students had a college that understood their unique needs. They believed students from sovereign nations deserved an education that fit their culture.
In November 2017, KBOCC bought the old Pelkie Elementary School. They paid just $1 for it! This building became an education center for the community. In January 2018, Debra Parrish retired as president after almost 30 years. Lori Ann Sherman then became the new president.
Learning About Ojibwa Culture
KBOCC makes sure that the Ojibwa language and culture are part of all its programs. Traditional leaders guide the teachers and staff on how to do this. Students also get chances to join in traditional ceremonies and events. This helps them connect with their heritage while they learn.
What You Can Study at KBOCC
KBOCC is officially recognized by the Higher Learning Commission. This means the college meets high standards for education.
At KBOCC, you can earn different types of degrees. These include Associate of Arts, Science, and Applied Science degrees. These degrees are usually two-year programs. They can help you start a career or transfer to a four-year university.
The college is also approved by the U.S. Department of Education. This approval means students can get federal financial aid to help pay for their studies.
KBOCC is part of the American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC). This group includes many colleges created by Native American tribes. KBOCC helps people in areas where there aren't many other college options. It provides important education beyond high school for these communities.
