History of Khanom Phing
People believe that Khanom phing first came to Thailand a long time ago, in the 17th century. It was brought by the Portuguese. A famous person named Maria Guyomar de Pinha is often given credit for creating or introducing many Thai desserts, including Khanom phing. She was a Portuguese-Japanese-Bengali woman who lived in Thailand during that time.
How Khanom Phing Changed Over Time
The Khanom phing cookies we see today are a bit different from the original ones.
Original Khanom Phing
The very first Khanom phing cookies were known for being super sweet and having a lovely smell. They were usually brown and would melt right away in your mouth. Back then, these special cookies were often packed in small jars and decorated with pretty ribbons. People would give them as gifts, especially for New Year's Day.
Modern Khanom Phing
Today, Khanom phing comes in many more colors, like pink, green, and yellow, not just brown! Also, the cookies are now made a bit harder than they used to be. This change helps them stay safe and not break easily when they are packed up and sold in stores. Even with these changes, they are still a popular and delicious Thai treat!
