Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Khariton Prokofievich Laptev (1700–1763) was an important Russian naval officer and Arctic explorer. He helped map parts of the far northern regions of Russia.

Early Life and Naval Career

Khariton Laptev was born in 1700 in a village called Pokarevo, near Velikiye Luki. This area is in what is now the Pskov Oblast in Russia. His cousin, Dmitry Laptev, who also became a famous explorer, was born nearby just a year later.

Khariton began his career in the Russian Navy in 1718 as a cadet, which is like a trainee officer. By 1730, he was skilled enough to be in charge of a military ship. In 1734, he took part in the siege of Gdańsk, a historical battle.

Exploring the Arctic: The Great Northern Expedition

From 1739 to 1742, Khariton Laptev led one of the groups in the Second Kamchatka Expedition. This was a huge project to explore and map the northern and eastern parts of Siberia.

Working with other explorers like Semion Chelyuskin, N. Chekin, and G. Medvedev, Laptev explored the Taimyr Peninsula. They mapped the coastline from the mouth of the Khatanga River to the mouth of the Pyasina River. During this journey, they also discovered several islands in the area.

After the expedition, Laptev helped create a "General Map of the Siberian and Kamchatka Coast." This map was very important for understanding the geography of these remote regions. He then continued his military service in the Baltic Fleet.

Laptev's Legacy

Khariton Laptev's explorations left a lasting mark on geography. Many places in the Arctic are named after him. These include:

  • The sea coastline of the Taimyr Peninsula.
  • A cape on the Chelyuskin Peninsula.
  • Other landmarks in the Arctic.

The large body of water known as the Laptev Sea was also named in honor of both Khariton Laptev and his cousin, Dmitry Laptev, because of their significant contributions to Arctic exploration.
