Kilauea Plantation facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Kilauea Plantation was a large sugarcane farm located on the north side of Kauai island in Hawaii. It also included the community of Kilauea, Hawaii. The company that owned and ran it was first called the Kilauea Sugar Company (started in 1880). Later, from 1899, it became the Kilauea Sugar Plantation, Co..

The land was first bought by an American named Charles Titcomb from Kamehameha IV around 1863. He used it for raising cattle. Later, two Englishmen, John Ross and E.P. Adams, bought the land and also rented more land from Titcomb. They started planting sugarcane and formed a company. The plantation operated for a long time, from 1880 until 1971.

Historic Buildings

Many old buildings from the Kilauea Plantation are still standing today. These buildings are so important that they are listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Some of these buildings are made of stone. This was a special local style where they used stones found in the sugarcane fields. Workers even laid down temporary railway tracks to move these stones from the fields to where the buildings were being built!
