Kilbride Castle: A Ruined Scottish Fortress

Kilbride Castle was located north of East Kilbride. It was a strong building that stood for many years. Over time, it became a ruin. This happened after another castle was built nearby.

Who Owned Kilbride Castle?

Kilbride Castle had several owners throughout its history. Each family played a part in its story.

The de Valognes Family

The de Valognes family first owned Kilbride Castle. They were an important family in the 13th century.

The Comyn Family Takes Over

Later, the castle changed hands. Isabel de Valognes married David Comyn. This marriage meant the castle and lands became part of the Comyn family's property.

Royal Changes in Ownership

Things changed for the Comyns when King Robert I became king. He took away the Comyn family's lands. The king then gave Kilbride Castle to Walter Stewart. Walter Stewart was a powerful person in Scotland.

In 1382, another king, King Robert II, made a new decision. He gave the lands of Kilbride Castle to John Lindsay of Dunrod.

Why Did Kilbride Castle Fall Apart?

Kilbride Castle did not stay in good condition forever. It eventually became a ruin.

The Rise of Mains Castle

In the 15th century, a new castle was built close by. This new castle was called Mains Castle. Once Mains Castle was built, Kilbride Castle was no longer needed as much. People stopped taking care of it.

Abandonment and Disrepair

Because it was not maintained, Kilbride Castle slowly fell apart. It became old and damaged. Eventually, it was completely abandoned. Today, only its ruins remind us of its past.
