Killeen Castle is an old castle from the 1400s. You can find it in Killeen, a place in Castlegar, County Galway, on the west coast of Ireland.

History of Killeen Castle

Killeen Castle was built in 1493. The Blake Family built it. They were one of the important families known as the "14 Tribes of Galway." These families were powerful merchant families in Galway long ago.

The Castle's Land

For many years, until the 1800s, Killeen Castle was part of a large estate. This estate was bigger than 100 acres (about 0.4 square kilometers). It had a farmhouse connected to the main castle tower. There was also a gatehouse near the N17 road. A big house stood on the hill above the gatehouse.

Changes Over Time

Sadly, the large house on the hill was destroyed by fire in 1922. Many big houses in Ireland faced similar events around that time. After this, a farmer from Tuam bought the estate and managed it.

Later, in the 1980s, the farmer's son sold the castle. A musician named Alec Finn bought it. Then, in the 1990s, Alec Finn sold the castle again. This time, a German filmmaker named Ralph Christians became the owner.

Since then, Killeen Castle has been made bigger. It has been turned into a comfortable family home.
