Kim Harrison (born September 30, 1966) is the pen name of an American author named Dawn Cook. She is famous for writing the New York Times #1 best-selling Hollows series. This series is a type of story called urban fantasy. Urban fantasy stories mix magic and mythical creatures with modern city life.
Besides the Hollows series, Kim Harrison has written many other books. These include stories for young adults, exciting science thrillers, and even graphic novels. She also writes traditional fantasy books under her real name, Dawn Cook.
The Hollows series, also known as the Rachel Morgan series, takes place in a world that is a bit different from ours. In this fictional world, a big sickness spread globally. This sickness was caused by special tomatoes that were changed by science. It led to many people around the world passing away. As Dawn Cook, she wrote the Decoy Princess and Truth series in the early 2000s.
Other authors have praised Harrison's work. Her books have even reached the very top of the New York Times Best Seller list.
About Kim Harrison
Her Early Life
Kim Harrison grew up in the Midwest. She has said she was a "tomboy" when she was young. She was the only girl in a family with many boys. Even though she loved writing, she didn't take many English classes in high school or college. She preferred to learn in her own way.
Her Writing Career
Harrison started her writing journey by creating traditional science fiction stories. However, she later decided to focus more on developing interesting characters. This led her to start writing contemporary fantasy. For almost ten years, she worked hard to become a published author.
She met her literary agent at a writing convention. This agent then introduced her to Diana Gill, who became her editor. Together, they created Dead Witch Walking. This book was published in paperback in 2004. Since then, she has written many more books in the Hollows series. She has also written two graphic novels and a detailed world book for the series. Many of her book titles are fun plays on words from Clint Eastwood movies. She has also contributed stories to other book collections.
After her first novel became successful, Harrison was able to quit her day job. This allowed her to focus on writing full-time. One of her favorite authors is Ray Bradbury. She also finds a lot of inspiration for her writing from music. She even shares song lists for some of her characters. In her free time, she connects with her fans through her website and blog.
Kim Harrison is a member of the International Thriller Writers group.
The first two books in her Truth series were originally planned as one big book. However, they were split into two separate books for publishing. It was revealed in a 2009 Locus magazine article that Dawn Cook and Kim Harrison were the same person.
Harrison has said she is happy this information is now public. She mentioned it was hard to keep her two writing identities separate. She would even have to remind friends and family which name to use when they were out.
