Harrison has written over two dozen books. These include young adult stories, fast-paced science thrillers, and graphic novels. She has also published traditional fantasy books under her real name, Dawn Cook.

The Rachel Morgan urban fantasy series takes place in an alternate history. In this world, a global sickness caused by genetically modified tomatoes wiped out many humans. As Dawn Cook, she wrote the Decoy Princess and Truth series in the early 2000s.

About Kim Harrison's Early Life

Kim Harrison grew up in the Midwest. She describes herself as a "former tomboy." She was the only girl in a family with many boys. Even though she loved writing, she didn't take many English classes. She only took the basic ones in high school and college.

Kim Harrison's Writing Career

Harrison started her writing journey with traditional science fiction. But she later decided to focus more on characters. This led her to write contemporary fantasy. She worked hard for almost ten years to become a published author.

She met her current agent at a writing event. This agent then introduced her to Diana Gill, who became her editor. Together, they created Dead Witch Walking. This first book was published in 2004 by HarperTorch.

Since then, Harrison has written many more books. She has also created two graphic novels and a detailed world book for the Hollows series. This series is also known as the Rachel Morgan series. Many of the titles in the series are playful references to Clint Eastwood movies. She has also contributed to several collections of stories. Some of these stories are prequels to the Hollows books, and one is a young adult story.

After her first novel became successful, Harrison was able to quit her other job. She could then spend all her time writing. Her favorite author is Ray Bradbury. She says music is a big influence on her writing. She even shares song lists for some of her characters. In her free time, she talks with fans on her website and blog.

Harrison is a member of the International Thriller Writers group.

The first two Truth books were originally one longer book. It was later split into two separate books for publishing. In May 2009, a magazine called Locus shared that Dawn Cook and Kim Harrison were the same person.

Harrison said she was happy this was public. She mentioned it was hard to keep two separate identities. She had to remind friends not to call her Dawn when she was being Kim. She felt the division had served its purpose. She would still be Kim, but now people could call her Dawn without a problem.
