Kim Patroca Kataguiri (born January 28, 1996) is a Brazilian politician and activist. He is known for helping to start the Free Brazil Movement. This is a political group that supports centre-right ideas, such as more economic freedom.
In 2018, Kataguiri was elected to the Chamber of Deputies, which is part of Brazil's government. He received the fourth-highest number of votes among all candidates in his state.
Political Journey
Kim Kataguiri's interest in politics started in 2013 when he was 17 years old. In a history class, his teacher said that a government program called Bolsa Família was the main reason Brazil's economy grew. This program gives money to families in need.
Kataguiri disagreed. He believed other factors, like Brazil's trade with China, were more important for the economy's growth. He also noticed that his classmates accepted the government's strong control over the economy without question.
Instead of arguing in class, Kataguiri made a video explaining his ideas and posted it on YouTube. The video became very popular. He realized he could use the internet to share his thoughts on the economy. He continued making videos, which were viewed millions of times as Brazil faced economic problems.
Starting the Free Brazil Movement
Kataguiri co-founded the Free Brazil Movement. This group promotes free-market ideas, which means they believe the government should have less control over businesses and the economy.
The movement's first major goal was the impeachment of Brazil's president at the time, Dilma Rousseff. Impeachment is a process used to remove a leader from office. Kataguiri's group believed the president had not done enough to stop corruption.
The movement also had bigger goals. They wanted to reduce taxes, cut down on complicated government rules (called bureaucracy), and sell government-owned companies to private owners (a process called privatization).
On March 15, 2015, the movement helped organize large protests across Brazil. In the city of São Paulo, Kataguiri spoke to a crowd of about 200,000 people.
Career in Congress
In the 2018 general election, Kataguiri ran for a seat in the Chamber of Deputies and won. He represented the state of São Paulo and received 465,310 votes.
In January 2022, he joined the Podemos political party to support Sergio Moro's campaign for president. A few months later, in March 2022, he switched parties again, joining União Brasil.
Personal Life
Kataguiri's grandparents were immigrants from Japan. He grew up in the cities of Indaiatuba and Salto. His father, Paulo Atuhiro Kataguiri, is a retired metal worker.
In his free time, Kataguiri enjoys playing the video game Dota 2. He sometimes streams his games live for his followers to watch.
