King's Castle is an old castle located in Ardglass, County Down, Northern Ireland. Its name in Irish is Caisleán an Rí, and in Ulster Scots it's Käng's Kessel. This historic building was first built way back in the 12th century. Over hundreds of years, new parts were added to it.

In the 19th century, some parts of the castle fell down while repairs were being done. Because of this, the castle had to be rebuilt to look like its original design. The rebuilding work finished in 1988. Today, King's Castle is used as a nursing home, providing care for people.

History of King's Castle

King's Castle has a long and interesting past. It was first built around the 1100s. This makes it a very old building with many stories. Over the centuries, the castle changed and grew. Different owners added new sections to make it stronger or more comfortable.

Rebuilding the Castle

In 1830, a big problem happened during some repair work. Parts of the castle collapsed because of issues with its foundation. This meant a lot of the castle was damaged.

To fix this, King's Castle was rebuilt during the 19th century. The goal was to make it look just like it did before the collapse. This was a big project that took many years. The restoration work was finally completed in 1988.

King's Castle Today

After its full restoration, King's Castle found a new purpose. It was opened as a nursing home. This means it now provides a home and care for people who need it. It's a unique example of an ancient castle being used in a modern way.
