The King Edward Hotel (also called the "King Eddy") is a historic building in Calgary, Alberta. It used to be a hotel. After being empty for a while, it became part of a big project to make the Downtown East Village area better.
A Look Back at the King Eddy
The King Edward Hotel was built over several years, from 1905 to 1910. It is located on 9th Avenue Southeast in Calgary. For many years, it was home to one of Calgary's oldest bars. The hotel closed its doors in 2004.
In 2012, the building was carefully scanned. This was done to save its history and help design the new National Music Centre. You can even see pictures from the outside scan, showing how the building looked before it was taken apart in 2013.
Becoming Part of the National Music Centre
In May 2008, the National Music Centre was chosen to work on bringing the King Eddy back to life. This was part of a special selection process.
In October 2013, workers began the careful job of taking the old hotel apart, brick by brick. Each brick was wrapped and stored in special containers. This kept them safe until they could be used again. Even the hotel's front doorstep was saved to be put back in place.
The new National Music Centre, which includes the rebuilt King Edward Hotel, opened in 2016. This big project cost $168 million. The National Music Centre has places for concerts, recording music, and broadcasting. It also has a huge collection of musical items. This includes the Canada Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame.
Reopening for Live Music
In 2018, the King Edward Hotel reopened its doors. It is now a permanent place where live music is played all the time.
