King Huan of Zhou was an important ruler in ancient China. His personal name was Jī Lín. He was the fourteenth king of the Zhou dynasty, a very long-lasting Chinese kingdom. King Huan was also the second king of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty, which lasted from 770 BC to 256 BC. He ruled for over 20 years, from 719 BC until his death in 697 BC.

King Huan became king after his grandfather, King Ping of Zhou. His father was Crown Prince Xiefu. After King Huan, his son, King Zhuang of Zhou, took over the throne.

A King's Challenge: The Battle of Xuge

One of the most important events during King Huan's rule was the Battle of Xuge. This battle happened in 707 BC. In this fight, the royal army of the Zhou dynasty was defeated. They lost to the forces led by Duke Zhuang of Zheng.

During the battle, King Huan himself was hurt. He was wounded in the shoulder by an arrow. This defeat was a big deal for the Zhou dynasty. It greatly reduced the respect and power that the Zhou kings had. Before this, the Zhou kings were seen as very strong. After this battle, their influence started to decline.

King Huan had a family, like all kings. His family played a role in the royal court and in alliances with other states.

King Huan's Sons

  • Prince Tuo (died 682 BC): He later became King Zhuang of Zhou. He ruled after his father from 696 BC to 682 BC.
  • Prince Ke: This prince had to leave the capital. He fled to a place called Southern Yan in 694 BC.

King Huan's Daughters

  • Zhou Wang Ji: She was a royal princess.
    • She married Duke Xiang of Qi in 695 BC. This marriage helped create a connection between the Zhou dynasty and the state of Qi.
