A Look Back: History of the Kinistin Saulteaux Nation
The Kinistin Saulteaux Nation was once part of a larger group. This group was known as the Yellow-quill Saulteaux Band. Their name came from Chief Ošāwaškokwanēpi, who signed Treaty 4. His name actually means "Green/Blue-quill."
However, because of how the Saulteaux language (Nakawēmowin) changed over time, his name was later mistranslated. It became "Yellow-quill" instead.
Who Was Chief Kinistin?
The Kinistin Saulteaux Nation is named after Chief Kiništin. His name means "Cree." He was one of the important leaders under Chief Ošāwaškokwanēpi. Chief Kiništin traveled to Saskatchewan from Western Ontario. He came with his two brothers, Miskokwanep ("Red [Crow-]Feather") and Mehcihcākanihs ("Coyote").
In 1901, special lands were set aside for the Kinistin Band. After Chief Ošāwaškokwanēpi passed away, the Yellow-quill Saulteaux Band divided into three separate groups. The group led by Chief Kiništin then became the Kinistin Saulteaux Nation we know today.
Where They Live: Kinistin Saulteaux Reserves
The Kinistin Saulteaux Nation has set aside three reserve areas for their people. These are:
- Kinistin Reserve 91: This is their main reserve. It covers 3,562.90 hectares (8,804.1 acres) of land.
- Kinistin Reserve 91A: This reserve is 457.30 hectares (1,130.0 acres) in size.
- Treaty Four Reserve Grounds (Indian Reserve 77): This smaller reserve, 37.1 hectares (92 acres), is shared. It is used by 32 other First Nations groups.
How They Lead: Kinistin Saulteaux Government
The Kinistin Saulteaux Nation has an elected government. This government is called a tribal council. It includes a chief and five councillors. These leaders are chosen by the community members. They work to make decisions for the Nation.
