Kinito Méndez's Musical Journey
Starting with La Cocoband
Kinito Méndez began his music career in 1988. He was one of the people who helped start a merengue band called La Cocoband. He worked with Alfonzo "Pochy Familia" Vásquez and Bobby Rafael. Kinito was very creative. He wrote and arranged many popular songs for La Cocoband. Some of these songs include "La Manito", "El Boche", "El Cacu", and "Mujer Malvada".
Forming Rokabanda
In early 1992, Kinito decided to start his own music group. He teamed up with Bobby Rafael again to create a band called "Rokabanda". This new group quickly became successful. In 1993, Rokabanda won the "Orquesta Revelación del Año" award. This award is given to the best new orchestra at Los Premios Cassandra. With Rokabanda, Kinito Méndez produced popular songs like "El Bacano", "El Ñoñito", and "Los Hombres Maduro".
Solo Success
Kinito Méndez then launched his solo career. In 1995, he released his first solo album, "El Hombre Merengue". This album was a huge hit! It sold an amazing 1.5 million copies. This showed how popular Kinito Méndez had become on his own.
The Song "El Vuelo 587"
In 1997, Kinito Méndez released a special song called "El Vuelo 587". This song was a tribute to American Airlines Flight 587. This flight traveled from New York City to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Kinito Méndez helped write the lyrics for the song. He sang it along with Johnny Ventura. The song was later included in an album called "Merenboom, Vol. 2".
Kinito Méndez himself had flown on that specific flight many times before. He said the song was originally meant to be about the joy of traveling to the Dominican Republic for holidays. The aircraft involved in the flight had an accident in 2001. Kinito's former manager, Papi LaFontaine, was on that flight. Kinito Méndez later thought about writing a new, slower song to honor everyone involved.
