What the Mill Makes
The Kinleith Mill produces a lot of paper and pulp each year. It makes about 330,000 tonnes of different types of paper. It also produces 265,000 tonnes of pulp, which is the main material used to make paper.
Powering the Mill
The factory has its own special power plant. This plant is called a cogeneration plant. It is run by a company called Genesis Energy. This plant burns wood waste to create electricity. It makes about 40 megawatts of power. Most of this power is used right there at the mill.
The rest of the electricity the mill needs comes from a large power line. This line brings power directly from the nearby Arapuni Dam.
Jobs at the Mill
The Kinleith Mill is the biggest employer in Tokoroa. It provides jobs for about 450 people directly. Another 280 people work there as contractors, mostly from a company called ABB. There is even a special path for bikes that runs between the mill and the town of Tokoroa.
A Look Back: How Kinleith Mill Started
The area where Kinleith Mill is located started as a place for cutting timber. Special forests were planted for timber starting in 1924.
Building the Mill
A strong railway line was built to reach the factory in 1952. This line is called the Kinleith Branch line. The mill itself started making products in 1953. At that time, Tokoroa was mainly a town where people lived and got services for the mill workers.
The Kinleith Mill was built by a company called New Zealand Forest Products. It was named by Sir David Henry. He named it after the Kinleith paper mills in Scotland, where he learned how to make paper.
