History of Kinnaird Castle
Early Days
Records show that a large house stood on this land a long time ago. In 1409, the estate was given to the Carnegie family. This is when a castle was first mentioned on the site.
In 1452, a big battle happened near Brechin. The Carnegie family supported King James II. Because of this, the castle was burned down by Alexander Lindsay, 4th Earl of Crawford.
Royal Visits and Changes
Many important people visited Kinnaird Castle. In 1617, King James VI stayed there. Kings Charles I and Charles II also visited. A famous person named James Graham lived at Kinnaird for three years starting in 1629.
In 1715, a person called James Stuart stayed at the castle. Because the castle's owners supported him, the government took their land away for a while. Later, in 1791, an architect named James Playfair changed the castle. He made it look more like a large, grand house.
Modern Times
The Carnegie family got their castle back in 1855. They updated it to look like a grand old Scottish castle. This style is called Victorian baronial.
Sadly, the castle burned down again in 1921. But it was rebuilt and still stands today.
