Kionne McGhee's Early Life and Education
Kionne McGhee was born in Miami. He went to Howard University and earned a degree in political science in 2000. Later, he studied law at the Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University. He became a lawyer after finishing his studies.
After law school, McGhee wrote a book about his life called "A Mere I Can is American." He then started working as a lawyer for the state in Miami-Dade County.
Serving in the Florida House of Representatives
In 2010, McGhee first tried to become a State Representative. He ran in the 118th District in Miami-Dade County. He ran against the person who already held the seat, Dwight Bullard. McGhee lost by a small number of votes.
Becoming a State Representative
In 2012, the areas for the Florida House districts were changed. The 117th District was a new area without anyone holding the seat. McGhee decided to run for this open seat. He won the primary election with 65% of the votes. A primary election is when people from the same party vote to choose their candidate.
After winning the primary, he ran in the general election. He was the only candidate, so he was elected without anyone running against him. He served in the Florida House of Representatives for four terms.
Important Work in the House
In 2014, lawmakers discussed a bill about guns. This bill would have allowed people without gun licenses to carry their weapons during emergencies. McGhee voted against this bill. He believed it could lead to problems. The Miami Herald newspaper praised his vote, calling the bill "misguided."
McGhee also supported raising the state's minimum wage. The minimum wage is the lowest amount of money an employer can pay workers. When a bill to raise the minimum wage did not pass, McGhee and some other lawmakers tried living on the minimum wage for a week. TV cameras followed him as he bought food for the week at a Publix store. This helped show how hard it was to live on a low wage.
McGhee could not run for the House again in 2020. This is because of "term limits," which means a person can only serve a certain number of terms.
Working for Miami-Dade County
In 2020, McGhee ran for a seat on the Miami-Dade County Commission. This seat was open because the previous commissioner, Dennis Moss, also reached his term limit. McGhee won the election against Elvis Maldonado.
As of December 11, 2024, Kionne McGhee also serves as the Vice Chairman of the Miami-Dade County Commissioners.
