About Kirin Kiki's Life
Kirin Kiki was born on January 15, 1943, in Kanda, a part of Tokyo, Japan. Her birth name was Keiko Nakatani. Her father was a talented musician who played the biwa (a Japanese lute). He was also a former police officer. Her mother owned a cafe and a restaurant.
Starting Her Acting Career
After finishing high school, Kirin Kiki began acting in the early 1960s. She joined a theater group called Bungakuza. At first, she used the stage name Chiho Yūki. She quickly became famous for playing funny and unique characters. You might have seen her in TV shows like Jikan desu yo or Terauchi Kantarō ikka. She also appeared in many television commercials.
How She Got Her Famous Name
Kirin Kiki changed her stage name in a very unusual way. On a TV show, she was asked to auction off something she owned. She decided to sell her first stage name, Chiho Yūki! She said she had "nothing else to sell." After that, she became known as Kirin Kiki.
Awards and Achievements
Even when she faced some health challenges, Kirin Kiki kept acting. She won many important awards for her work. In 2008, she won the best actress Japan Academy Prize for her role in Mom and Me, and Sometimes Dad.
She also received the best supporting actress award from the Yokohama Film Festival in 2004. This was for her roles in Kamikaze Girls and Half a Confession. In 2008, she won the best supporting actress Blue Ribbon Award for her performance in Still Walking.
Kirin Kiki's Family Life
Kirin Kiki married fellow actor Shin Kishida. They later separated in 1968. In 1973, she married musician Yuya Uchida. They remained legally married even though they lived separately after 1975.
Her Children and Grandchildren
Kirin Kiki had one daughter named Yayako Uchida. Yayako is a writer and musician. She even played a younger version of her mother's character in the movie Tokyo Tower: Mom and Me, and Sometimes Dad. Yayako Uchida is married to actor Masahiro Motoki.
Kirin Kiki's granddaughter, Kyara Uchida, also became an actress. She appeared with her grandmother in two movies: I Wish and Sweet Bean.
Later Years and Passing
Kirin Kiki was diagnosed with cancer in 2004. She continued to work and inspire many people. She passed away on September 15, 2018, at the age of 75.
Honours and Recognition
Kirin Kiki received special honours from the Japanese government for her contributions to arts and culture.
