Kito Lorenc (born March 4, 1938 – died September 24, 2017) was a German writer, poet, and translator. He was known for his beautiful poems and for translating works from other languages. Kito Lorenc was also the grandson of Jakub Lorenc-Zalěski, who was a famous writer and politician.

About Kito Lorenc's Life

Kito Lorenc went to the Sorbian boarding high school in Cottbus from 1952 to 1956. After that, he studied Slavic languages and cultures in Leipzig from 1956 to 1961.

From 1961 to 1972, he worked at the Institute for Sorbian People Research in Bautzen. This institute studies the Sorbian people and their culture.

Later, from 1972 to 1979, Kito Lorenc worked as a dramaturge. A dramaturge helps choose and prepare plays for a theater or performance group. He worked for the State Ensemble for Sorbian People's Culture. This group performed Sorbian folk culture.

Kito Lorenc was also a member of the Sächsischen Akademie der Künste, which is an academy for arts in Saxony. He lived as a freelance writer in Wuischke by Hochkirch. Being a freelance writer means he worked for himself, writing books and poems.

Kito Lorenc's Writings

Kito Lorenc wrote many poems and also translated books. His works often explored themes about nature and the Sorbian culture. Here are some of his well-known works:

  • "Nowe časy - nowe kwasy" (New Times - New Weddings), a collection of his poems, published in 1962.
  • "Struga. Bilder einer Landschaft (Struga. Pictures of a Landscape)", another book of his poetry, published in 1967. This book focused on images of the landscape.
  • "Flurbereinigung", a collection of his poetry from 1988.
  • "Die wendische Schiffahrt (The Wendish Voyage)", published in 2004.

He also helped translate works by other Sorbian writers into different languages. For example, he translated fables by Handrij Zejler.

Kito Lorenc received many important awards for his writing. These awards recognized his talent and his contributions to literature. Some of his awards include:
