Klocks Crossing, once known as Pleasant Grove, is a small community in Jefferson Township, located in Clinton County, Ohio. It used to be a "whistle stop" along the B & O Railroad. A whistle stop was a place where trains would stop only if someone needed to get on or off, often by signaling with a whistle.

A Look Back: History of Klocks Crossing

The area now known as Klocks Crossing was first called Pleasant Grove. It was founded around 1857. This small town was built along the Hillsboro Branch of the Marietta & Cincinnati Railroad. Later, in 1890, the B & O Railroad bought this railway line.

Early Industry: Making Charcoal

In the late 1800s, one of the main jobs in Klocks Crossing was making charcoal. This happened at a very large charcoal oven facility. These ovens were called 'beehive kilns' because of their shape. They were known as the biggest beehive kilns in that part of Ohio. Many local people worked at these ovens for many years.

How Klocks Crossing Got Its Name

The name of Pleasant Grove changed to Klocks Crossing in 1899. This change happened after an accident involving a local resident named Harley Klock. He was struck by a B & O freight train. After this sad event, the town decided to rename itself Klocks Crossing to remember him.

Klocks Crossing in the 20th Century

After the charcoal-making station closed down, Klocks Crossing became much smaller. It changed from a busy whistle stop to just a "flag stop." A flag stop meant that trains would only stop if someone waved a flag to signal them. The town's population also became smaller over time.
